World potato photography contest focuses on “a global food”
Photographers will highlight central role of the Andean tuber - and of agriculture in general – in the fight against hunger and poverty
Rome, 12 March 2008 – A world photography contest to highlight the role of the potato as a source of food, employment and income in developing countries was launched today by FAO and the United Nations. The contest is being held in conjunction with the UN’s International Year of the Potato (IYP) in 2008.
IYP aims at raising global awareness of the potato’s key contribution to agriculture, the economy and world food security, and at fostering improved potato-based systems to help countries achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
The IYP World Photography Contest, “Focus on a global food”, invites photographers to capture the spirit of the International Year in images that illustrate potato cultivation, processing, trade, marketing, consumption and utilization.
“Potato is the world’s number 4 food crop, after rice, wheat and maize, with annual production of more than 300 million tonnes,” said FAO’s NeBambi Lutaladio, the IYP coordinator. “It is grown in more than 100 countries, from the Andes and China's Yunnan plateau to the subtropical lowlands of India, on the plains of northern Europe and the steppes of the Ukraine. Photographers who explore the world of the potato will find plenty of subject matter.”
Sponsored by Nikon, the IYP photography contest is an opportunity for photographers to showcase previous work or to capture new images that depict the many activities related to this vital crop. The contest has separate categories for professional and amateur photographers, and will accept single digital images or “photo stories” of four to eight related images, in either black-and-white or colour. Participants can submit their digital files by uploading them directly via internet or sending them by normal post on a CD-ROM.
The winning photographs will be chosen by a selection panel that includes some of the world’s leading professionals working in the field of photography. Winners in the professional and amateur categories will be awarded cash prizes totalling some US$11 000 as well as Nikon cameras. The deadline for entries is 1 September 2008.

14 CONCURSO LATINOAMERICANO DE FOTOGRAFÍA DOCUMENTAL
"LOS TRABAJOS Y LOS DÍAS"

Convocatoria

1. El tema de las fotografías debe girar alrededor de seres humanos (sin importar edad, sexo o raza) realizando algún tipo de trabajo u oficio. Esto no quiere decir que no puedan enviarse obras donde la presencia humana esté implícita a través de objetos o de materia, pero será el jurado quien decida sobre la pertinencia de estos tratamientos. En esencia, nuestra propuesta busca enfocar la mirada de los fotógrafos hacia el factor humano como protagonista fundamental del proceso productivo.

2. Como nuestro interés está centrado en los trabajadores latinoamericanos, invitamos también a enviar fotografías que documenten la situación laboral y social de los inmigrantes latinoamericanos en los países desarrollados.

3. Sólo se admiten imágenes digitales, entendiendo por éstas, imágenes que provengan de una captura con cámara digital o que hayan sido escaneadas desde negativo o papel. Los concursantes podrán ingresar únicamente sus fotografías por Internet, para lo cual deberán llenar el formato que estará disponible en la página web www.ens.org.co/concursoFotografia desde el 1 de diciembre de 2007 hasta el 1º de marzo de 2008, fecha límite para la recepción de obras.

4. El fotógrafo deberá identificar su obra u obras con un TÍTULO. No se admiten obras "Sin Título", por su inconveniencia para archivo y catalogación. Cada obra deberá estar acompañada de un texto escrito, con una extensión que no exceda un párrafo de 100 palabras ó 550 caracteres, en el que describa la información concisa sobre las personas fotografiadas y su contexto laboral (por ejemplo: ubicación geográfica, nombres, características del trabajo, remuneración, duración de la jornada, etc. Recomendamos que sea una información concreta y sustantiva). Este texto deberá escribirlo en el correspondiente campo en el formato de Internet disponible para ello.

5. Cada imagen digital deberá enviarse en un archivo JPG con una resolución de 72 DPI. El lado mayor de la imagen debe medir 500 pixeles. En caso de que las obras sean seleccionadas para la exposición, la organización del evento se comunicará con el concursante para que haga un envío definitivo en una resolución adecuada para la impresión. Se recomienda a todos los concursantes partir desde el inicio de archivos en alta resolución, que tengan un peso de entre 2 y 3 megas (ya se trate de fotografías tomadas con cámara digital o de negativos escaneados), a partir de los cuales se pueden obtener tanto las imágenes para envío por Internet, como los archivos de mayor calidad, en caso de que sean seleccionadas.

6. La inscripción de las obras es gratuita.

7. Las OBRAS recibidas serán consideradas como fotografías individuales. Cada participante podrá presentar un máximo de cinco OBRAS. En caso de que varias fotos integren una sola obra, se considerará como tal si el conjunto tiene un solo título y cada foto está debidamente numerada y lleva escrita la palabra "Serie" (Serie x 1, serie x 2, etc.). Una SERIE no podrá tener más de cinco (5) fotos y será considerada en su conjunto como una sola OBRA. Cada concursante tiene derecho a enviar hasta 5 obras, ya sean estas fotos individuales o series.

8. Cuando el concursante ingrese a la página web del concurso, encontrará unos campos de información personal que debe diligenciar como parte de la inscripción, tales como El seudónimo, el título de la obra (o las obras), nombre y apellidos, número del documento de identidad, profesión u oficio, dirección completa, país y ciudad, así como e-mail y teléfono. Todos los campos deben ser llenados, sin omisión, para habilitar la inscripción.

9. PREMIOS. Las fotografías serán sometidas a consideración de un jurado compuesto por tres reconocidas personalidades del medio fotográfico. El jurado hará la selección de las fotografías para la exposición, de las cuales escogerá tres primeros lugares y dos premios especiales, un premio especial sobre el tema de niños, niñas y/o jóvenes trabajadores y el Premio Especial María Cano sobre Mujeres Trabajadoras. (María Cano fue una importante dirigente sindical de la primera mitad del siglo veinte, cuyo trabajo pionero logró importantes beneficios para los trabajadores colombianos.)

(El premio especial sobre trabajo infantil debe tener imágenes de niños o niñas, o de jóvenes trabajadores. El premio especial de mujer trabajadora debe involucrar la presencia de mujeres realizando algún tipo de trabajo).El acto de premiación y la apertura de la exposición se realizarán en la semana previa a la celebración del Primero de mayo de 2008, como parte de los eventos conmemorativos del Día Internacional del Trabajo que organiza la Escuela Nacional Sindical.

10. Las fotografías seleccionadas y premiadas pasarán a ser propiedad de la Escuela Nacional Sindical, institución que se reserva el derecho de publicarlas o exponerlas reconociendo el respectivo crédito para los autores. Las obras seleccionadas y premiadas pasarán a formar parte del archivo físico y digital de la ENS, que podrá exponerlas y publicarlas, reconociendo el respectivo crédito, pero sin ninguna retribución económica para los autores.
